Mission
The Land Institute is leading a global movement to transform agriculture and secure a sustainable future for all. We develop perennial crops and advocate for systems that work with nature to feed humanity and repair our environment. We collaborate with farmers, scientists, and with the plants themselves to evolve humanity’s relationship with the earth: from taking to sharing; from depletion to restoration.
Profile
Natural ecosystems are self-sustaining—yet humans have been disrupting them since the dawn of agriculture.
Our modern system relies on annual grain crops. These are commonly planted every year and maintained by tillage, leaving the soil exposed to erosion and releasing greenhouse gases. Plus they require chemical and fossil fuel inputs that are both energy intensive and biologically destructive.
Perennials represent a fundamental shift, holding the potential for a truly regenerative future. We work in service of this future—one where humanity and nature flourish together as a collaborative system. Where diverse, perennial crops—like grains, legumes, and oilseeds—cover our farmlands, building healthy soil, restoring waterways, and producing abundant food and economic growth for farmers and their communities.
At The Land Institute, we’re cultivating this revolution—one seed, one field, one relationship, one story at a time.
